Purchasing of parts designed for wind energy and other biofuel machinery applications have been nearly nonexistent this year. Also, the use of magnesium to make the aluminum alloys that make 1.5 million metric tons per year annually of beverage cans appears to have stagnated in the face of competition from plastics bottles.

Magnesium, as an oxide, also is used as a deoxidizing agent in the smelting of aluminum, titanium and other nonferrous metals; as refractory material in furnace linings for producing iron, steel and glass; as a desulphurization agent in steelmaking; as a raw material when making Portland cement in dry process plants; as an insulator in industrial cables, as a basic refractory in industrial cables and as a principal ingredient in construction materials used for fireproofing.
Patzer of the International Magnesium Association says that "the typical seasonal summer slowdown is being exacerbated by the lack of business from traditional, big-volume end users and materials competition from the aluminum industry." The big debate, he says, is whether the bottom of the demand slide has occurred and, if it has, when the demand pickup will become apparent.

Driven by environmental programs across the consumer electronics industry, portable electronics product manufacturers are opting for light, yet tough, magnesium for everything from flash audio/video players to digital cameras, mobile phones, computer notebooks and radar detectors. Patzer says that "components that house and protect highly sensitive technology inside entertainment and communications devices must exhibit strength and durability and magnesium meets the design challenges of the consumer electronics becoming lighter, thinner, and more mobile."

Inserts For Die Casting Tooling. There are four types of die cast tools. These are: the single cavity die, the multiple cavity die, the unit die and the combination die. However, all of these dies may have one thing in common. These may be using smaller pieces of metals called inserts. With the advancement in the designing process, many of the more sophisticated die casting tooling can now be fabricated successfully using these smaller pieces of metal. Although these may look nothing more than thin rods of material or even a blob of metal (literally) inserted in the die, inserts are probably the best and most economical way of creating sophisticated cast die pieces.

The main purpose of inserts is to create the holes or the running tubes within the piece. In earlier times, these holes or tubes can only be “placed” within a finished piece by manually or mechanically gouging it out. Needless to say, this can be a pricey affair especially if you consider the actual cost of hiring either skilled workmen to drill the holes or buying machines for the same purpose. Also this practice was subject to a lot of errors and therefore not feasible for mass production – especially when quality control is very rigid.

Fortunately, inserts can now be easily accommodated in most cast die machines. The material used for inserts depend on the actual materials being processed by the machines. As a rule hot chamber machines use molten materials with lower melting points like copper, lead, magnesium and even zinc. On the other hand, cold chamber machines use mainly aluminum or aluminum based alloys which have higher melting points. The inserts are made from the same materials as the actual die, usually steel alloys, but these are reinforced to make sure that metal erosion does not take place during the actual production stage.

Incendiary use: Magnesium is flammable, burning at a temperature of approximately 2500 K (2200 °C, 4000 °F), and the autoignition temperature of magnesium is approximately 744 K (473 °C, 883 °F) in air. The extremely high temperature at which magnesium burns makes it a handy tool for starting emergency fires during outdoor recreation. Other related uses include flashlight photography, flares, pyrotechnics, fireworks sparklers, and incendiary bombs.

Magnesium die casting metal and its alloys are explosive hazards; they are highly flammable in their pure form when molten or in powder or in ribbon form. Burning or molten magnesium metal reacts violently with water. When working with powdered magnesium, safety glasses with welding eye protection are employed, because the bright white light produced by burning magnesium contains ultraviolet light that can permanently damage the retinas of the eyes.
