Die Casting - Advantages and Disadvantages. A liquid is defined as having a definite volume but no definite shape. Its principle is that liquids follow and take the shape of its container. This principle is applied in the procedure known as casting. In the process of casting, a solid material, usually a metal, is melted down to its liquid form and poured onto a die casting mold with a shape desired by the user. The liquid is then permitted to solidify and is cautiously taken out of the mould. A solid is now acquired which is similar to the mould it was poured onto. For metals, this procedure is called die casting and involves forcing the liquid into the mould using high pressure. This process has been around for centuries and is particularly useful for recycling scrap metals.

Tensile strength can be increased by up to 3x the standard tensile strength by layering the same material together during the die casting process.

Die Casting – Disadvantages

Starting a die casting business is very dangerous because of the very high capital cost needed. The machinery as well as the materials to be used is very costly. Another disadvantage is the limitation of the process to high-fluidity materials. Casting weights must also fall in between the range of 30 grams to 10 kilograms. The last casting will also have a relatively low porosity which makes it challenging for heat treatment or welding because doing the above-mentioned methods may lead to cracks and exfoliation of the product's surface. Finally, since a big production of volume is needed for a single product, companies are limited to manufacturing only quite a few products at a time liable on the number of machines they have. The lack in porosity severely delays the production of auto parts because the metal should be permitted to cool down every time a welding process is done.
