Die Casting 101: What is a die casting draft angle? Die casting is not very new. Engineers and manufacturers have known the process of die casting metal parts. Die casting refers to the manufacturing of metal parts and products in the procedure of pushing melted metal alloy inside a steel mold. With high pressure and velocity, the melted metal is pushed and hardens into sturdier metal parts utilized in several ways reliant on what the product is formed for (e.g. car parts, compartments, lighting fixtures, and so on). A person might be think, “how can the liquid metal, as it hardens and stabilizes, not get trapped inside the die?” The answer is because of the draft angle.

What is a die casting draft angle? Draft angles are the narrow slopes merged in the surface of the area inside the die cast, typically recognized on both the opening direction of the die and its sliding cores. What is a die casting draft angle for? To answer the question asked above, a draft angle is a factor of the procedure of die casting that allows the die cast part to be expelled in an easier way. Contingent on what the metal part is, the proper measure of drafts should follow to the die cast part in order to support, both the surface of the die cast and the surface of the metal part inside.

What is a die casting draft angle’s operation during die casting? Draft angles are merely combined inside of the die, making its opening broader than its base so that it can effortlessly be ejected.

How Die Cast Parts Can Save the Planet. A die casting company will be proud to know that die cast parts are recyclable parts. This means that after they expire from their present condition, they can be used in other applications so as not to waste precious metals and metal alloys that can otherwise harm the environment if left around for scrap. Because the market for die casting, as opposed to other casting methods, is steadily and continuously growing, product engineers can rest easy knowing there is a proven recycling infrastructure waiting to reclaim die cast parts that have been recycled or reused, and a die casting company that is actively involved in the process can feel proud about affecting the world in a positive way.

When someone asks me “what is Draft Angle of Aluminum Die Casting Parts?” or “why do I need a draft angle on my aluminum die casting box part?” The technical answer is, all aluminum die castings require a draft angle on the walls of die cast box parts perpendicular to the parting plane or parallel to the slide interfaces. Since I have selling die cast parts for over 20 years, I find simple answers and provide simple calculations for my customers. What does that mean to the typical engineer, any engineer other than tooling or mechanical or professional buyer?

Aluminum Parts Die Casting Draft Angle

Aluminum Die Casting Parts need an angle to be ejected (extracted) from the die casting mold (die cast die). This draft angle is measured in degrees. The typical draft angle for an aluminum die cast part is two degrees. To measure two degrees of aluminum draft angle, one would measure the part on the larger section and deduct 0.017" for every degree of draft angle to calculate the thickness of the smaller section.

People ask me what is die cast draft angle and I try to give examples that most people can relate to, because most people do not have a need to concern themselves with how things are made, only what is made, and will it be what they need. I ask, “Have you ever noticed on a cupcake the bottom diameter is smaller that the top diameter?” or “Have you noticed that a cake pan has sides that slope in toward the middle of the pan?” That would be an extreme example of a draft angle. Aluminum die castings would stick inside the die casting tool, molds, or die casting die if there was not enough draft angle in the tool and part. The typical draft angle for an aluminum die casting part is two degrees per side. The calculation for that is simple if a person is familiar with die casting production part design, but is not familiar to most people.

Aluminum Enclosure

Picture a box sitting on a table with the open side up.  The box is 2" deep inside with the height and width 4" each way on outside.  The walls of the box are 0.10" thick.  Due to the wall thickness, a few things are evident to a part designer concerning this simple box:

  • The overall height of the box is 2.10" tall.
  • The interior of the box at the top of the opening is 3.80" x 3.80".

A 2 degree draft angle will change the dimensions in the following on the interior and exterior and should be considered if something needs to fit inside or outside: box:

  • The top inside dimension will be 3.80" and the bottom inside will be 3.664"
  • The top outside dimension will be 4.00" and the bottom outside will be 3.864"

If box design for the interior of 4" x 4" at the bottom: box:

  • The top inside dimension needs to be 4.136"
  • The outside top dimension will be 4.336".
